On Friday we asked our Facebook Fans "What are the biggest obstacles for you to listen to your teen?" The most popular answers were that the parent and teen(s) misunderstood each other or the parents got easily frustrated with their teens.
Understanding one another can be a great first step in general communication and understanding, and can be one way to quickly eliminate frustration between both parents and teens. As the parent in a conversation, it may be easiest for you to take action first by making a effort to communicate clearly. One quick solution to mis-communication that is often times overlooked is to put everything else aside and make your teen your focus point.
Making them your focus is a great shortcut to understanding details of whatever it is your talking about, by focusing on them they will get the feeling that you are truly listening and making an effort to understand them as well as their needs.
Listening may very well be your golden rule as a parent, as teens tend to change frequently and in some cases rapidly. What may be the norm for them one day may be different the next, such as musical tastes, interests in school, etc. By constantly reminding yourself to be a listener you can be on top of your game in understanding them and the things they like.
